Everyone gets stressed out sometimes. It’s a fact of life.
Stress serves a valuable function; it keeps us alert during times where we perceive a need to remain alert.
However, modern life imposes an unnatural level of stress upon us, and this excess stress wreaks havoc on both our health and our enjoyment of life.
That is why it is critical that we develop techniques for dealing with the stress that inevitably arises during our day to day life.
Most people don’t put any conscious effort into reducing the stress in their lives, which is a huge shame. This is one of those things that has a huge return on investment for your mental well-being.
A little bit of effort in stress reduction goes a long way towards improving your life.
In this segment of the course, we will go through several exercises that will help you to both manage stress more effectively as well as reduce its occurrence in your everyday life.
Tomorrow, I will explain the concept of “self-talk” and how it applies to your life.
The power of monitoring your self-talk is almost unfathomable until you have tried it for yourself.
It is not easy at first, but with time gets easier. The rewards are well worth it, and you will immediately notice yourself feeling better.
Next, the concept of “reframing” will be discussed.
This is a more specific and directly practical technique, leading to an immediate change of mindset. Practiced regularly, this will make you a more positive person who can more flexibly respond to the challenges of life.
The following day I will talk about a much more general concept, that of accepting yourself.
While this is a less immediately practical lesson, it is necessary for you to accept yourself to get full enjoyment out of life.
The fourth day of this segment will be about appreciating the simple pleasures in life, which I have already written about here.
Finally, I will go through one of my favorite exercises of all time. I won’t say much about it right now, but suffice it to say it is awesome.
By the end of these few days you will have several tools at your disposal for minimizing the stress in your life.
Take advantage of these exercises. As a reminder, they are not supposed to be “difficult”, but they are stimulating, and can require some time.
On Day 1, you made a commitment to do these exercises to the best of your ability. If you stick with that commitment, you will reap the benefits.
Continue on to Day 10: Start Monitoring Your Self-Talk.
